Prof. Jean Drèze: A Champion of Poverty Alleviation and Social Justice in India – Recently was awarded “Global Inequality Research Award”
Prof. Jean Drèze is one of the most influential development economists associated with India’s fight against poverty, inequality, and social deprivation. A renowned scholar and public intellectual, Drèze has dedicated decades of his life to understanding the realities faced by marginalized communities and advocating for policies that promote human welfare.
His research has focused extensively on issues such as poverty, hunger, nutrition, education, healthcare, and social security. Through rigorous fieldwork and evidence-based analysis, he highlighted the multidimensional nature of poverty in India and emphasized that economic growth alone is insufficient without equitable access to basic services and opportunities.
Working closely with Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, Drèze contributed significantly to the development of the capability approach, which views development as the expansion of human freedoms and capabilities. He also played an important role in shaping landmark welfare initiatives such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Right to Food Campaign, and policies aimed at strengthening public distribution systems and social protection.
Architect of MGNREGA: Prof. Jean Drèze played a pivotal role in conceptualising and advocating the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), enacted in 2005. The programme guarantees 100 days of wage employment to rural households seeking unskilled work.
Employment Generation: Over the last two decades, MGNREGA has emerged as one of the world’s largest public employment programmes. According to analyses co-authored by Drèze, the scheme has generated billions of person-days of employment, providing a crucial safety net during periods of agrarian distress and economic shocks.
Right to Food Campaign: Drèze was one of the leading voices behind India’s Right to Food movement, which influenced policies such as the expansion of the Public Distribution System, Mid-Day Meal Scheme, and ultimately the National Food Security framework.
